The Calculus Affair is a two-part episode of The Adventures of Tintin, produced by Ellipse-Nelvana, based on the book of the same name by Hergé. This was the final episode of the show's first season.

Changes from the Book[]

Jolyon Wagg was only seen when he visits Marlinspike Hall and his family is completely removed from the episode. In the book, both Bordurian and Syldavian agents are spying on Calculus while the TV episode shows only the Bordurian agents spying on Calculus. Also, the Bordurian agents Boris and Stefan follow Tintin and Haddock all the way from Marlinspike Hall to Geneva in the TV episode while the book shows Boris spying in Marlinspike Hall and Stefan spying in Geneva with another unnamed accomplice. Also, in the book, Calculus disappeared after going out of the hotel. In the TV episode however, Calculus reached Topolino's house after the blast and also met Tintin and Haddock in the hospital. He was kidnapped by the Bordurian agents after leaving the hospital and taken to their embassy and later in a motorboat. In the book, however, the Syldavians take Calculus away from the Bordurians from the embassy. Later, the Bordurians again take Calculus away from the Syldavians which is mentioned in the newspaper.

Production errors[]

  • In Part 1 (and the recap in Part 2), when Tintin, Nestor and the Captain hear the gunshot fire a bullet through the professor's hat, Nestor has black eye lids.
  • In Part 2, after Krônick and Klûmsi introduce themselves, the Captain's cap badge disappears.
  • In Part 2, in the exterior shot of Tintin looking out of the window of the hotel, he is wearing his brown jacket instead of his beige coat.
  • In Part 2, when the Professor Calculus decides to destroy the plans for his machine, the camera pans down to show that the animators forgot to draw the professor's left hand and properly render the lower half of his coat.
