He was the one to confirm Professor Calculus's release to Major Kardouk in Sponsz's absence after Tintin and Captain Haddock meet with Kardouk in disguise with Sponsz's documents. Despite the fact that Sponsz never confirmed the release on the phone, he still let Calculus go. Sponsz was naturally furious with Kavitch upon learning of this.
