Flight 714 is a two-part episode in The Adventures of Tintin, produced by Ellipse-Nelvana, based on the book of the same name by Hergé. This was the final episode of the show's second season.

Changes from the Book[]

In this episode, Rastapopoulos and his gang use dynamite instead of explosives to destroy the statue in the cave. Also, Rastapopoulos says that he was planning to shoot Doctor Krollspell, whereas in the book he merely says "eliminate", and does not reveal his plans for the other crew members or the Sondonesians. The crew members and Sondonesians also have appear less frequently than they do in the book and have less lines in their respective scenes. As a result, the Sondonesians never verbally warn the gangsters about the dangers of entering the alien temple but simply run away in fear. Allan was not beaten up by the Sondonesians, neither did he lose his teeth. Also, the shootout that Tintin and Captain Haddock have with Allan and his men is longer than in the book.

When Tintin and the captives enter the dinghy, Krollspell is also shown trying to board the dinghy but is stopped by Mik Kanrokitoff, something which did not occur in the book. In the end, the spaceship drops Dr. Krollspell off in India; in the book it drops him off in Cairo, Egypt (although the original French version also had Krollspell transported to India). The group is hypnotized after they get on the spaceship; this is perhaps more believable as the volcano was about to explode.

Tintin and the others are woken up by the pilots who discover their dinghy rather than doing so at a Djakarta hospital. Several changes are made to the interview scene ending, with Jolyon Wagg once again being absent (and so it is not shown where the television broadcasting the news is located) and Carreidas and Skut not being interviewed by Colin Chattermore. Additionally, Tintin does not reveal his plans for catching the next flight to Sydney to Chattermore so it is unknown whether Tintin or the others actually attended the astronautical Congress or not.

Voice cast[]

Goofs[]

  • Kanrokitoff has the captives and Krollspell hypnotised to ensure that the last thing they remember only what he tells them to, namely flying in Carreidas' jet. However, as Krollspell was never on the jet while it was being flown from Djakarta to Pulau-Pulau Bomba he should have no reason to be hypnotised into remembering this,
    • It is likely that Krollspell was hypnotised off-screen into remembering everything before the time he arrived on the island with Rastapopoulos (though in the novel he was said to have completely lost his memory).

Production errors[]

  • When Mik uses hypnosis, his eyes change colour at times. In the scene where Mr. Carreidas is hypnotised while blaming Tintin for stealing his hat, Mik's eyes flash grey and white. When he uses mass hypnosis on the group after they board the spaceship, his eyes flash grey and blue. When he says "You will be forgetting everything about this island", they flash green and whitish grey. When he tells the group to board the safety raft, they flash clear and white.
  • When Rastapopoulos and His Crew were saying "Yes sir" Allan's Mouth isn't moving.

Trivia[]

  • Although it was said in the book that Tintin, Haddock and Calculus were guests of honor for being the first men to walk on the moon in the comic, the episode does not mention this detail. This is likely because the moon episodes had not yet aired.
